A Santaquin resident used the council’s recognition period Tuesday to thank local first responders for their aid after a family medical emergency and to present a letter honoring the crews who helped her.
Mary Elizabeth McSorley described calling 911 when her husband became gravely ill and said the police and emergency-medical technicians brought "kindness, the comfort, and the protective shield" that helped her through the moment. "You are the quiet heroes that walk into chaos and offer order, compassion, and dignity," McSorley told the council.
Councilmembers invited members of the city’s police and emergency medical services to the front for a group photograph with McSorley and presented a plaque recognizing the care she described.
In other recognitions, the council acknowledged the winner of the city’s decade-long "What I Love About Santaquin" photo contest. City staff said the winning image — an action shot of a boy jumping off a horse submitted by Steve Gray — will be framed and hung in City Hall with a plaque commemorating it as the outstanding photo of the past 10 years.
Why it matters: public recognitions highlight community services and volunteerism and give residents an official forum to thank city personnel.
Ending
Council members said they would like to start each meeting with similar community recognitions and thanked McSorley and the first responders for attending.
