Maple Heights board approves intervention program for grades 6–12 and updated preschool curriculum

The Maple Heights Board of Education voted Oct. 13 to approve two curriculum adoptions: the REWARDS reading intervention program for grades 6–12 and an updated Creative Curriculum for the district preschool.
Dr. Price described REWARDS as the district's secondary intervention program to meet a state requirement that districts adopt intervention curricula across grades K–12. "We couldn't do the M class for secondary. So REWARDS will do that," Dr. Price said, describing the program as a small‑group, skill‑focused intervention that is monitored frequently. The board packet lists the REWARDS purchase and staff professional development for middle and high school at $9,234.40.
Dr. Price said the district has already adopted CKLA/MClass for K–5 and that K–5 intervention is in place. He said secondary students will be grouped by specific skill deficits for daily 30‑minute intervention and will be monitored every 10 days; parents are involved in required improvement plans when students are behind grade level.
For preschool, Dr. Price said the district is updating to the newer Creative Curriculum to remain in compliance with Ohio's Step Up To Quality standards and to provide training for new preschool staff. The packet lists the preschool curriculum and professional development at $15,085.
Board members approved both purchases by roll call. The superintendent said staff will present outcome data (state test/OAS or OST data referenced) at the end of the year to evaluate results.
