Council approves immediate elevator repairs at Rec Center; TIF to cover over-budget cost
Summary
Council approved replacement of three elevator components at the Rec Center — metallic fittings ($7,800), pump unit ($26,000) and valve ($9,600) — with the work recommended to be done while technicians are onsite; staff said the cost is about $38,000 over budget and that the TIF can cover the expense.

City staff briefed the council on recommended elevator rehabilitation work at the Rec Center. An elevator audit identified three components that staff recommended replacing while technicians are onsite to avoid longer future downtime and higher costs.
Staff described the three items and their vendor estimates: metallic fittings ($7,800), a complete pump unit replacement ($26,000) and a valve replacement ($9,600). Staff advised that delaying parts until failure could result in a one- to three-month outage because replacement parts are sourced from Peoria and scheduling could be delayed.
“While they’re on-site, it’ll save us time and money to do it when they’re there already,” staff said. The council was told the project is approximately $38,000 over the budgeted amount for the elevator modernization; staff recommended funding the additional cost from the TIF, which they described as healthy enough to absorb the increase.
The council moved, seconded and approved the additional work; staff said the vendor is scheduled to return in December and that the elevator remains operational at this time.
