Spring-Ford committee backs replacing decades-old RCTV system with Cablecast to restore and modernize broadcasts

The Spring-Ford Area School District Community Relations Committee recommended replacing the district’s aging RCTV broadcast system, first installed in 2008, with a modern Cablecast platform that would restore cable-channel service and add streaming on smart-TV apps, the committee reported Tuesday.
RCTV manager Mr. Rothermel told the committee the district’s Comcast and Verizon educational channels have been offline since May because a key piece of equipment failed. He proposed funding the upgrade from his capital reserve and said he has a plan to replenish that reserve annually.
“...he proposed replacing this outdated system with Cablecast, which is a modern platform that will not only restore Spring Ford's traditional cable broadcast, but also allow RCTV content to stream on smart TV apps like Apple TV, Roku, and Fire Stick,” the committee report said.
The committee also revisited earlier discussions about monetizing RCTV content on YouTube and concluded it is not practically feasible given limitations Rothermel described. Additional committee items included a yearlong plan to promote Aramark school-lunch options and recognition of 55 staff “Parent Square Super Users” driving district communications.
Next steps: The Cablecast replacement will appear on the board agenda for approval; Rothermel plans to fund the project from his capital reserve and to present details on replenishment and scope when the contract is considered.
