Fit City Center moves toward public opening as staff schedule trainings, soft launches

Spanish Fork City Council members heard a detailed construction and operations update on Oct. 21 as Fit City Center managers said the new recreation complex is nearing completion and staff are scheduling trainings and phased soft openings.

The update outlined remaining construction tasks, outstanding inspections and a staged timeline for staff training, member soft openings and a public grand opening. Project leaders said building inspections are nearly complete, elevator certification and final pool testing remain, and wood gym floors must be acclimated and finished before full use.

City and Fit City Center staff emphasized the remaining items are largely finishing work. “We’ve had the building inspection come and pass and the health department inspection is scheduled,” a Fit City Center representative said. Staff said they are waiting on the elevator inspector to complete certification before warranty coverage becomes effective.

Why it matters: The Fit City Center has been a multi-year capital investment for the city. Council members and staff explained the center will add year-round recreation, childcare and senior programming and will also change ongoing operational responsibilities and budgets for the parks and recreation department.

Details and schedule - Fit City staff described a seven-week execution plan that begins with staff trainings, equipment deliveries and staged moves into the building. Managers said lifeguard and aquatics training has occurred in other city pools already and that employee onboarding and systems testing will continue once occupancy is granted. - Construction tasks remaining: elevator certification, final pool fills and testing, moisture control and installation/finishing of wooden basketball floors (staff said floor sanding, staining and sealing will take several weeks once nailing begins). - Inspections and occupancy: staff said the county health inspection and final punch-list sign-off are scheduled; the city will not sell membership access tied to the front desk until those final steps are complete.

Membership sales and outreach Shelly Ann White, the center’s membership and operations supervisor, reported nearly 2,000 membership sales since mid-September and a total membership base the center is tracking at roughly 7,000 people (city residents and nonresidents combined). Staff are offering a “founders” pricing incentive that locks an early purchaser’s rate for five years and a “two months free” promotion for members who sign up before the building opens.

Soft openings and public access The plan calls for staged “soft opening” blocks for members and community groups, then a public soft-opening week with full public access and a three-day grand opening celebration. Managers said soft openings will include guided tours, short-format fitness and aquatics demonstrations, and community partner previews so systems can be tested with controlled attendance before full daily operations begin.

Council comment and next steps Council members thanked staff and the development team for steady progress and asked staff to confirm a formal public opening date at the next meeting. Staff said they aim to provide a confirmed opening date within roughly two council meetings, contingent on final inspections and contractor punch-list completion.
