New Vanderburgh Arboretum director says utility work done, programming to expand

Lisa Schmidt, executive director of the Vanderburgh Arboretum, told the Two Rivers City Council on Oct. 20 that the arboretum has resolved prior utility problems at its propagation center and is preparing to expand programming and volunteer events.

Schmidt, who said she became executive director in June after serving as development director since September 2024, told the council that the arboretum worked closely with city staff and that funding from the West Foundation helped complete much of the utility work. "We have successfully resolved all previous utility challenges at the propagation center," she said, and added that electrical work could be complete "in the next few weeks," while sewer and water would take longer.

The utility work, Schmidt said, will allow the arboretum to increase volunteer events and public programs. She described plans to host monthly events during colder months and multiple events during the May-through-September season, including educational workshops and guided hikes. Schmidt credited founder John Durborough for establishing the arboretum's 65-acre sanctuary and said the current effort is intended to build on that legacy with broader community involvement.

Council members and other meeting participants praised work done at the site and encouraged public use of the trail system. Schmidt said the arboretum aims to be "a community green space" offering recreation, art and nature programming.

Next steps include completing remaining utility hookups, expanding volunteer recruitment and posting upcoming events on the arboretum's website and social media channels.
