Kyle Davis, a Salem City councilor at-large, announced his bid for re-election and outlined policy priorities in a campaign video released ahead of the Nov. 4 election. He said his recent work has focused on housing affordability, workers' rights, environmental protections and public-health measures.
Davis said one of his accomplishments was sponsoring a ban on a rodenticide he described as "rat poison" that has harmed wildlife and household pets. "This is a rat poison that has unfortunately harmed so many beautiful animals that consume rodents and even household pets," Davis said. He added that predators that consume rodents are "actually our best tool" for pest control.
Davis also said he brought forward a proposal to regulate gas-powered leaf blowers, calling them harmful to users' health and disruptive to neighborhoods. "These gas leaf blowers have been incredibly harmful for our environment," he said, adding they pose "incredible threats to their health" for landscapers and are "incredibly noisy, disturbing our peaceful neighborhoods."
On housing, Davis said he introduced a home-rule petition to limit brokers' fees charged to renters. He described the practice as an additional charge to renters who did not hire the broker and often did not interact with them. "This was an incredibly unfair practice that it felt, very necessary to curb in order to help Salem renters much more easily, secure housing," he said. He also cited support for updates to the accessory dwelling unit ordinance to make it easier for homeowners to build backyard cottages and in-law suites.
Davis noted other priorities including support for infrastructure upgrades and a city resolution in support of transgender and nonbinary residents. He said he worked on policies to ease the burden on residents during the Halloween tourism season by limiting tour group sizes and enforcing noise ordinances.
Davis closed by asking for voters' support on Nov. 4 to continue his work on the council.
Kyle Davis is running for reelection to the Salem City Council at-large seat and listed housing, environmental regulation and public-health protections among his top priorities.
