The Apple Valley City Council on Sept. 25 proclaimed Oct. 5–11, 2025 as Fire Prevention Week, emphasizing safety around lithium‑ion batteries used in common household devices.
Fire Chief Matt Nelson read a proclamation noting that lithium‑ion batteries power many household electronics and that misuse, damage or improper charging can cause overheating, fire or explosion. The proclamation cited guidance from the National Fire Protection Association and urged three calls to action for residents: buy only listed products, charge batteries safely and recycle batteries responsibly.
Chief Nelson said the fire department will visit Apple Valley elementary schools (pre‑K through fifth grade) during Fire Prevention Week and will host three public open houses for residents on Oct. 8–10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the city’s fire stations. The department plans demonstrations, equipment displays, a tot‑lot and family activities; Culver’s will provide custard at the open houses, Nelson said.
A motion to approve the proclamation was made by Councilman Bridal and seconded by Council Member Bergman; the proclamation passed by voice vote.
