Bloomington proclaims October 2025 Disability Employment Awareness Month

Mayor Tim Bussey and city staff proclaimed October 2025 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month for the City of Bloomington at the council meeting on Sept. 29.
The proclamation highlighted the contributions of people with visible and non‑visible disabilities to workplaces and the community and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to inclusive employment practices. City employees participating in the Better Together employee resource group described the group’s work to support employees with disabilities, to advocate for reasonable accommodations and to connect employers with resources.
Speakers included Maxine Peguers Ilica of the planning/committee team and Ben Benar of the city communications department, who explained that 1 in 4 people in the United States live with at least one disability and urged employers to consider reasonable accommodations and inclusive hiring practices. The proclamation referenced an October 31 event by the city’s planning team that will include resource tables, a lunch and a panel of speakers to provide information to employers and employees.
Council members thanked the presenters and joined them for a ceremonial photo following the proclamation.
