The Tuscaloosa City Public Projects Committee approved six minor public-works contracts and an amendment to an engineering contract at its meeting, advancing small-scale infrastructure, security and maintenance work across the city.
The committee approved a $42,145 minor public-works contract with Civil Works Construction to install a fire-line extension on Greensboro Avenue near the corner of Jack Warner Parkway. Mike, a city staff member, said the work is tied to easements the city acquired during negotiations for the Jack Warner Parkway roadway project: in exchange for easements, the city agreed to install a fire line to the adjacent building, described in the packet as the former River Hill apartment development. Mike said the water-line work will occur on the Greensboro Avenue side of the property and is funded from the Jack Warner Parkway project budget; staff said the project remains under budget.
The committee also approved Amendment No. 1 to the engineering contract with Capstone Engineering Group for the 30 Sixth Avenue East drainage-improvement project, for $3,009.50. Zach, a city staff member, said the design is complete and the amendment covers steps to obtain the necessary easements for grading and to address an exposed sewer line behind Barclay.
Other contracts approved included:
- A $52,008.75 contract with Chip Griffith Construction for security updates in Annex 2. Tim, a city staff member, described work to modify corridors, add controlled-access double doors and change a door swing to limit public access to staff-only areas, and to add access control on Courtroom B so normal public flow is preserved while improving staff and courtroom security.
- A $9,016 contract with Taylor Electrical for purchase and installation of Holofane light poles at Snow End Park to replace a pole damaged earlier this year. Tim said the pole was struck "by the tree crew in the truck," and staff said they have asked the city's legal office to open an insurance claim.
- A contract with Trane for repair of HVAC Unit 300473 for the Public Works facility; the committee approved the contract as presented and staff identified the unit and control-board failure as the reason for repair.
- A contract with Stripes Painting Company to refresh airfield ramp markings required by the Federal Aviation Administration; Jennifer, a city staff member, said the work will repaint about 1,900 feet of markings to restore visibility and reflectivity for pilots.
Each item was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote during the meeting; the recorded action for every agenda item was approval. Committee members asked clarifying questions about easement locations, maintenance funding and insurance for the park pole; staff provided the explanations summarized above. The committee announced its next public projects meeting for Tuesday, Oct. 7.
