The department asked for four additional crew-worker positions to address staffing deficiencies and listed several pay-grade upgrades including moving senior equipment operators and supervisors up one grade. The director said Public Works currently operates with 26 employees in roles that historically numbered higher; the city covers roughly 51 square miles and the department described substantial daily operational demands.
A long equipment list was provided with the director noting many units are specialized and costly; some trucks date to 1998-1999. The department highlighted that an asphalt paver and a roller/paver combo should be purchased together. Ongoing operating requests included contract increases such as a $17,000 raise for the Sweeper Corporation America sweeping contract and a 5% CPI adjustment in the garbage contract.
The director said equipment requests are prioritized in the binder in descending order and advised the incoming mayor be briefed on top priorities. Council asked for clear prioritization and the director confirmed the equipment list is ordered by priority. Funding decisions will be made in the budget process.
