Board adopts Williams resolution on sufficiency of textbooks; parents urge inclusive, online access to materials

The Board adopted the annual Williams resolution confirming sufficiency of textbooks and instructional materials as required by Education Code Section 60119.
Assistant Superintendent Devin Krugman read the Williams summary into the record and told the Board the resolution documents school surveys, notes where schools reported insufficiencies and states corrective actions taken. Staff told the Board that where shortages were identified at listed sites, orders for replacements have been placed and delivery schedules were being confirmed with schools.
During public comment several speakers urged that the district post proposed instructional materials online for public review before adoption and that the materials better reflect the district’s diverse student population. One commenter asked that the district make physical inspection copies available to members of the public who cannot review materials online.
Board members asked clarifying questions about timelines for deliveries and whether Chromebooks would be considered instructional materials under the Williams process; staff responded that Chromebooks are not considered textbooks or instructional materials for the Williams sufficiency determination and that schools were provided delivery schedules internally. The Board adopted the Williams resolution by roll-call vote; staff said they would add delivery date information to public-facing documents where appropriate.
