The Indianapolis City Community Affairs Committee unanimously voted to send Proposal 02/2025, the annual budget for the City of Indianapolis Animal Care and Control (Marion County, community affairs portion), to the full City-County Council with a due-pass recommendation.
The committee chair opened the meeting and asked whether members had questions before deciding whether to forward the proposal to the full council. Councilor Graves asked how budget adjustments were going; the director of Animal Care and Control said, “It's going, it's going great. Not not too bad. We got some challenges, but we're working through them. So we're looking forward to, the beginning of next year and getting in the new building.”
Councilor Roberts asked about a recent health issue affecting shelter cats. The director said the current isolation period for the cats ended the day of the meeting and staff planned to reevaluate them the following morning, adding, “As of this morning or this afternoon, actually, no one else had broken with any new illness. So we will potentially go back to normal functions tomorrow.”
With no further questions, a motion to forward the proposal with a due-pass recommendation was made and seconded. The committee voted by voice; the chair announced the recommendation would be sent unanimously to the full council meeting on Monday.
The vote and due-pass recommendation move Proposal 02/2025 to the City-County Council for final consideration. The committee did not provide additional budget line-item detail during the discussion. The director noted operational challenges and the pending move to a new facility next year but did not specify dollar amounts, staffing changes, or timeline specifics during the committee discussion.
The committee adjourned after forwarding the item. The full City-County Council will consider the proposal at its next scheduled meeting on Monday.
