Signal upgrades at Rogers Ave and Boston Ave deferred to larger Broadway/Ball Square reconstruction project

Engineering staff said the intersection requires a detailed technical review that is best addressed as part of a larger reconstruction of Broadway through Ball Square, where the city will undertake broader signal and street work. Jessica Bello, senior traffic engineer, and other staff are working through a backlog of signal upgrades, and staff said cabinet capacity and the proximity of Willow Street mean a one‑off fix would be inefficient.
“...the next best way to handle this, especially because of Willow Street, is to couple this into a larger construction project,” staff told the committee. The city’s five-year plan includes a Broadway reconstruction project, and staff said the Rogers/Boston signal work is expected to be part of that multi-year program; staff estimated the work could be a few years out but did not provide a definitive year.
Committee members expressed frustration at the lack of a near-term fix but asked staff to keep the item active and to work with neighbors on interim solutions if feasible. Staff said they would monitor opportunities to pair equipment upgrades with other capital work and return with updates to the committee.
