Facilities and operations update: classroom repurposing, grounds vendor, athletic field winterization and capital-plan generator additions

District facilities staff updated the committee on a range of operational items including space repurposing, grounds maintenance, athletic-field preparations and capital-plan adjustments.
Facilities staff said Gwenor Elementary repurposed part of a large library into three new classroom spaces over the summer to address enrollment and program needs. At Penbrook Middle School, staff are removing underutilized locker areas, walling off space and converting them into three flexible-use areas with benches, booths and high-top seating while retaining some lockers for those who want them.
Gorkon (contractor) has taken over grass-cutting across elementary schools and staff reported positive feedback from principals and supervisors, citing flexibility to accommodate school schedules. Facilities and athletic staff are also formalizing an annual winterization and spring-prep program for athletic fields: the fall work will include covers for infield mix and, where appropriate, turf blankets, with caution noted for excessive growth or snow-mold risk.
Staff said they have adjusted the 10-year capital plan based on an assessment of emergency generators across district buildings, adding four additional generator replacements to bring the total now reported to six units scheduled for replacement in the coming years.
Finally, staff described enhanced coordination with athletic directors on field maintenance and said they will formalize procedures to ensure spring readiness. Committee members had no additional questions and the update will be included in ongoing monthly reporting.
