The recommendation follows a competitive solicitation in which Myco Mechanical submitted the low responsive bid of $164,000. The district said two other firms — Southland Industries and Johnson Controls — did not submit timely or responsive bids; Johnson Controls indicated it could not meet the project time frame because of its existing workload.
Committee members described the work as part of a multi-year plan to replace aging modular classroom units. “These are three that are in some state of disrepair. So they rose to the top as doing them first,” a district staff member said. Committee members and staff said the existing modular HVAC equipment dates back roughly to the 1990s.
Committee discussion also flagged local contracting and wage differences as reasons for the price variance. The staff member noted Myco Mechanical is local and nonunion, which reduced travel and labor-cost components compared with a union bidder based farther away.
The motion to recommend the bid award passed with no recorded opposition. The item will go to the full school board for final action.
Details recorded at the committee meeting said the three-unit replacement is the first tranche of a phased program to modernize modular classrooms at Penfield Middle School, which the committee noted has more than 20 modular units in total.
