Tribal council to hold monthly culture committee meetings; creates work groups for election code, council house, seal

The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council voted Sept. 25 to change the schedule for its culture committee to monthly meetings and to form three work groups to handle near-term priorities: election code revisions, council-house construction, and creation of a tribal council seal.
Councilman Cody Poindexter introduced the idea to move the culture committee from bi-monthly to monthly so the language department, Cherokee cultural organizations and the new heritage center can bring updates each month instead of compressing two months of material into one meeting. Poindexter said monthly meetings on committee days would better support the planned “flow” of legislation through committees and rules. Councilman Condesa Teehee and other council members voiced support during the discussion.
The council approved a motion to hold culture committee meetings monthly on committee meeting day — specified during debate as the first Monday after the second Saturday — with the change intended to align committee review and rules processing.
Separately, the council created three work groups, each limited to no more than eight council members and tasked with developing recommendations for the full council:
- Election code revision work group (members named at session): Josh Sam; Condesa Teehee; Kevin Easley; Ashley Grant; Sasha Black Fox Qualls; Joe Dear; Kendra McGady; Julia Coats.
- Council house construction work group (members named): Josh Sam; Lisa Hall; Uriah Grass; Cody Poindexter; Clifton Hughes; Mobina Shop Pouch; Dora Petzkowski; Danny Callison.
- Tribal council seal work group (members named): Johnny Kidwell; Sasha Black Fox Qualls; Condesa Teehee; Lisa Hall; Uriah Grass; Darryl Legg; Cody Poindexter; Dora Petzkowski.
Council members discussed process details including limits to group size to avoid creating a quorum, and that each work group should pick a point of contact to gather feedback and interact with departments. Councilwoman Julia Coats volunteered to step aside from one panel to keep membership within the eight‑member limit and members agreed to the process of routing updates through the appropriate committee (for example, council-house updates to the resources committee, seal development to culture).
All motions creating the schedule change and the three work groups were adopted during the Sept. 25 session.
