High school construction advances; contingency nearly used and several openings set for fall and winter

The Metuchen Board of Education’s construction committee reported progress and remaining tasks for multiple school construction projects during the Sept. 30 meeting.
Committee chair Mr. Glassberg said soils removal at the high school remains under discussion with responsibility for that work unresolved, and that most of the project contingency has been used. He said the committee is quantifying change orders before recommending next steps.
Glassberg reported that the high school outdoor patio is complete but not yet in regular use; the new gymnasium, classrooms and board offices are targeted for completion in the middle to later part of December. The cafeteria addition is expected to come back online in January after temporary board offices move. Field lights were targeted to be energized in mid-December.
At Edgar, Glassberg said some rooms have new air conditioning operational while others do not; district staff expected the new air conditioning to be fully operational soon and noted the new office suite is open. At Campbell the air conditioning is up and running, the cafeteria is in use, and the playground and basketball court are open. At Moss the air conditioning is operational, repurposed board offices converted into classrooms are in use, and an addition is targeted for late January to accommodate first- and second-grade classrooms in time for next September’s realignment.
The committee flagged remaining site work and the near-exhaustion of contingency funds as issues the district must monitor; it said the committee will meet Oct. 6 for a public update and to discuss the budget.
Why it matters: Construction timelines affect classroom availability, short-term space arrangements for staff and students, and the district’s capital budget. The committee’s report underscores continuing project management tasks (change orders, contingency management and remaining site work) ahead of planned openings.
Mr. Glassberg and the board encouraged public tours and celebratory events once projects are complete; the committee scheduled its next public meeting for Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Metuchen High School Media Center/Library.
