Planning commission tables zoning and land-use ordinance update to Oct. 28 after public comment on manufactured homes

Sweetwater — The City of Sweetwater Planning and Zoning Commission on Sept. 30 voted to table consideration of a proposed zoning and land-use ordinance update until its Oct. 28 meeting so commissioners and staff could complete additional work sessions and refine proposed zoning districts and the future land-use plan.

Planning staff told the commission they have held two work sessions since the commission last discussed the item and planned another work session before the October meeting. “Because of that ongoing work… staff is recommending that you table deciding today to the Oct. 28 meeting so that you can finalize and fine tune and have also an opportunity to amend the future land-use plan,” planning staff said.

During the public-comment portion of the hearing, Kirk Harris said he opposed proposed changes that would remove manufactured homes from the neighborhood transition (NT) district. “Basically, what it is… removing manufacturing homes from that district,” Harris said. The transcript records another speaker, Galen Milton, identifying a property at 2120 Fourth (Houston Broadway) but his comments in the available transcript were not fully recorded.

After public comment a commissioner moved to table the zoning update to Oct. 28; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The transcript does not record a roll-call vote or additional conditions attached to the tabling motion. Staff and commissioners said the additional time would allow further review of proposed districts and any amendments to the future land-use map.

No final zoning changes were adopted at the Sept. 30 meeting; the matter will return to the Planning and Zoning Commission on Oct. 28 for further consideration.
