Board adopts 2026 legislative platform; adds early‑learning funding ask

The Hillsborough County School Board unanimously approved its 2026 legislative platform on Sept. 30 and agreed to add an early‑learning priority requested by several board members.

Superintendent Van Ayers described the platform as a tool to focus district advocacy. “HCPS adopts a legislative platform each year. Having an HCPS specific platform focus our advocacy, on efforts where it can have the greatest impact for our district,” he told the board during the consent and discussion period.

Amendment for early learning: during discussion Member Combs moved to add an item asking state lawmakers to increase early‑learning funding by 10% to support academic and social readiness for kindergarten; the motion was seconded and accepted. Member Rendon asked that the platform language also include a requirement that early‑learning providers receiving state funds be held to consistent standards aligned with the district’s expectations, saying programs should be “required to have the same level of standard.” The makers of the motion accepted that clarification and staff said they would work with legislators, partners and the board to draft specific language.
