Tacoma Public Schools honors First Creek Middle School student for lifesaving Heimlich maneuver

The Tacoma School District Board of Directors recognized First Creek Middle School student Evan Sula for using the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge an obstruction from a classmate’s airway during a potentially life‑threatening incident.
Shalee Hobbs, the district’s director of health services, told the board that during class a student began to choke and that Evan performed multiple abdominal thrusts until staff could intervene. "His quick thinking and actions helped the student," Hobbs said, and she commended Evan for his calm response.
Hobbs told the board Evan learned the lifesaving skill in health class. The board invited Evan to speak; he politely declined to make remarks. Board members praised the student and the district’s health curriculum; one board member noted that many adults would not know how to respond in a similar situation.
The board presented a recognition for Evan and invited family members to join a photo. The item was on the agenda under recognitions and drew brief public praise from board members and the superintendent.
