Committee adopts veterans recognition policy for volunteers aligned with Wisconsin statutes

The Milwaukee School District Committee on Legislation, Rules and Policies adopted draft policy 9800.01 clarifying how the district will recognize veterans who volunteer in classrooms and confirming the policy does not create a separate volunteer category.

Board Governance staff told the committee the draft was held for clarification on whether a separate policy category was needed for volunteers who are veterans. Staff said the Neola team revised the policy to make clear that all volunteers are subject to the same requirements and that Wisconsin statutes require the district to work with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs to recognize veterans for their service after they volunteer their time.

Director Benoit moved to adopt policy 9800.01 as attached; the motion passed by roll call with Directors O'Halloran, Benoit and Chair Zomber voting aye.
