Coffey County approves Road & Bridge equipment purchases, 2,500 tons of salt and extra road striping

Commissioners approved a two-unit order of 2025 Bushog (15-foot FlexRing rotary cutters) from Schlue sales and Hook Repair in Linden, Kan., under a cooperative municipal pricing arrangement; the stated purchase amount for that item was $53,100 and the board authorized staged payment for two units (two now, two after the first of the year was discussed for future orders).
On the supply side, the board awarded the de-icing salt contract to Independent Salt of Kanopolis, Kan., for ASTM Grade 1 road salt at $53 per ton and authorized the purchase of up to 2,500 tons (total cost approved $132,500) with funds coming from the Road & Bridge fund. Commissioners approved an additional centerline striping add-on of roughly 45 miles at an estimated $26,000 to paint centerlines on higher-classification roads; the striping bid will be an increase in quantity under the contract price.
Supervisors said some existing equipment is older (examples cited from 2010) and the purchases are meant to replace or phase out units approaching high maintenance costs; vendors were represented as providing warranties (one vendor quoted a 10-year gearbox limited warranty and two-year machine warranty for a quoted product). Several waivers relied on cooperative purchasing program numbers shown at the meeting rather than a formal competitive bid.
Why it matters: Approved purchases and salt procurement are part of the county's winter-season readiness and routine road maintenance. The purchases will increase available spreading and mowing capacity and commit $132,500 for salt stockpile procurement from the Road & Bridge fund.
The motions were moved and seconded and carried by voice vote; the transcript records "all in favor/aye" and "motion carries." Commissioners signaled interest in balancing equipment rebuilds and replacement based on longevity and inventory needs.
