Ken-Caryl parks and recreation report: irrigation projects, community center pipeline, and resident concerns

Richard, a parks maintenance supervisor, and Amy, recreation staff, briefed the Ken-Caryl board on Sept. 9 about ongoing and planned parks and recreation work.
Richard said the community-center pipeline project is scheduled for late October (exact date not finalized) and should take less than a week to complete. He reported the pools have been winterized and crews are preparing to replace a damaged wood deck at the Ranch House pool with concrete; no final timeline was provided for the deck replacement. Richard also described progress on an irrigation project in North Ranch that took longer than expected because crews discovered leaks during pressure testing; he said crews expect to finish cleanup and shut down irrigation for the year near Oct. 1, subject to rainfall.
Richard said staff are working with an irrigation designer to replace the Ranch House irrigation system. The intent is to redesign the system to break it into three independent irrigation zones (the current system has three water sources and three backflow devices) so future replacements can be staged as separate projects.
Amy reported on recreation programming and events: a fitness open house this weekend, and the Colorado Tennis Championships (CTC) beginning Friday and running through Oct. 5, with matches at both the Ranch House and the Community Center. Amy said youth programs had successful recent events including a 'Bug and Fly Family Day' and full-moon hike, and noted upcoming community events including "Boo Bash." She said more event details will be posted and that the district expects increased traffic while the tennis tournament runs.
During public comment, Willow, a resident, urged targeted maintenance of greenbelt turf to reduce irrigation demand: she recommended aeration, a scheduled fertilizing program, and mapping and exposing sprinkler heads and valve control boxes so crews can more easily find and repair heads. "I think if we do those two things, then we can cut back on the watering," Willow said, and asked that staff flag buried sprinkler heads before seasonal shutdowns.
Staff responded that fertilizing had been decreased and then reinstated in recent years and that some mapping work exists; Richard said he has mapped portions of the system and will coordinate additional mapping and head maintenance in response to public comment.
Ending: Staff will continue design work on the Ranch House irrigation replacement and return updates on pipeline scheduling and construction timing as county permitting and contractor availability are resolved.
