ARB debates illuminated trademark logos for Dairy Queen sign, questions Halo-lit Kia monument design

Albemarle County’s Architectural Review Board on a hybrid meeting discussed whether company logos that illuminate in their entirety should be allowed on entrance-corridor signs, focusing on a Dairy Queen building-mounted logo and a proposed monument sign for Flow Kia at Pantops.

Board staff presented the county’s sign guidelines, noting that the rules favor external illumination and require opaque backgrounds for cabinet signs in the county’s entrance corridors; staff asked the board for direction on whether that opaque-background requirement should apply when the entire face of a cabinet sign is a trademarked logo.
