Physical Therapy Board withdraws recognition from 18 continuing-competency approval agencies

The Physical Therapy Board of California voted to withdraw recognition from 18 continuing-competency approval agencies on Sept. 24, citing either failure to respond to board requests for information or formal requests by the agencies to be removed.
Actions and vote: For each motion, the board recorded unanimous votes of those present. Board members voting across motions were recorded as "Aye": Karen Brandon, Sam Que, Dale Armstrong and Talakayla. Tanya McMillan was absent for the votes; each motion carried 4–0.
Why this matters: Recognized approval agencies supply course accreditation and recordkeeping that the board uses to verify licensees’ continuing competency. Staff told the board it plans to collect and publish more course catalog information and is preparing regulation language that would authorize an application fee for approval agencies to sustain the continuing-competency (CC) program.

Board staff said agencies removed may still provide courses covered under other recognized approval agencies; removal is reversible if organizations later supply required information and reapply.
Staff recommendation and next steps: Licensing staff said it is building an automated CC database to collect provider and course data and to improve audit efficiency. That database work will inform proposed CC regulations, including a potential agency fee to sustain program operations. "All of this effort will feed into the CC reg proposals, especially the agency fee," Sarah Conley, assistant executive officer (presenting for Valerie), said.
