University of Idaho Extension staff brief commissioners on local programs, enrollment, and research

University of Idaho Extension staff reintroduced their local team and summarized ongoing programming and recent results for Bannock County.
Jennifer Reeder, family and consumer sciences educator, described life-skills and nutrition programming and noted the Eat Smart Idaho program; Becky Woodhouse, Eat Smart Idaho coordinator, provided statewide success metrics and noted local pantry and small-space garden work. Nikki Ennis, 4‑H county chair, reported 222 4‑H participants at the recent fair and more than $400,000 in livestock sale proceeds and said enrollment is expected to be high for the new program year starting in October.
Reed Finley, half-time horticulture and crops specialist, summarized agricultural research and regional pest monitoring. He described a multi-year study tracing E. coli and coliform in Mean Creek using genetic tracing funded by a $40,000 grant; he said the tracing implicated multiple sources, including cattle, dogs, humans and wildlife. Finley also reviewed small-grains rotation studies, non-dormant alfalfa trials, master gardener online coursework, and outreach such as potato school and cereal school.
Extension staff asked commissioners to share priorities where county support would be helpful and outlined plans for school-based outreach, after-school and summer programming, and a planned extension column in a local journal to inform residents about programming.
Commissioners thanked the extension staff for their work; no formal action was required during the presentation.
