Transportation update: district reports driver counts, recruitment steps and bus replacement schedule

Transportation staff provided an operational update to the student support services and operations committee covering driver staffing, recruitment, mechanics and planned bus replacements.
“...we have 96 drivers that cover AM and PM routes. We have 16 drivers that cover the AM or PM. We can need a total number of drivers is a 125,” the transportation presenter said, describing current staffing. The presenter said the district is up seven substitute drivers, has had 13 applicants since August, and is currently onboarding three. Some applicants lack commercial licenses and must wait for the next training class.
Recruitment efforts include job postings at local colleges and a planned recruitment banner on the side of a bus. Staff noted ridership counts taken Monday–Friday determine next year’s transportation funding; an example mass call had a 52% success rate. Mechanics staffing includes one shop supervisor, an inventory manager, three mechanic‑3 staff, a mechanic‑1, two fuelers and a part‑time fuel worker; additional mechanics from a staffing group are gaining hours to qualify as mechanic‑1.
On bus replacement, staff listed eligible buses to be replaced this year and projected future replacements in 2026–2028 so that by the 2028–29 school year no bus will be older than a 2017 model. The update was presented for information only and did not require committee action.
