Madison Heights City Council on Sept. 29 proclaimed October 2025 as Fire Prevention Week and highlighted this year’s theme: safety around lithium‑ion batteries in household devices.
Fire Marshal Nate Figueroa accepted the proclamation and told the council he had already responded to multiple lithium‑ion battery incidents in recent months, including one that caused significant property damage. "Thankfully, nobody was injured, but it's a reminder of how quickly these incidents can happen and the importance of prevention," Figueroa said.
The written proclamation noted that lithium‑ion batteries power many household electronics — smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e‑bikes, e‑scooters and vape devices — and that misuse, damage or improper charging can cause batteries to overheat, ignite, or explode. The document urged three calls to action for residents: buy only listed products, charge batteries safely, and recycle them responsibly.
Figueroa said safety resources and practical tips for charging, storage and recycling are available on the city's website under the fire department tab. He thanked the council for recognizing the week and supporting the fire prevention division’s outreach efforts.
The proclamation was accepted formally at the meeting and will be included in city outreach for October.
