Council reviews multiple private-sale redevelopment items; some addresses amended or deferred

At the Sept. 30 premeeting the Newark Municipal Council reviewed a slate of private-sale redevelopment entries on the agenda covering multiple wards and project types, including new construction of two-family homes, a business resource center, mixed-use buildings and transitional housing.

Brandy Daniel, legislative coordinator for Economic and Housing Development, told the council she was requesting an on-the-floor amendment to one item to remove the address "743-745 South Eleventh Street" and to revise sale-price and square-footage information; she said the amendment had been forwarded to the clerk.

Council members also noted that Avon Avenue was to be removed from at least one item and asked staff to resend updated backup documentation. Sponsors moved or seconded several items: the council voted sponsorship or seconding for items including a four-story business resource center in the West Ward (sponsored by Councilman Kelly, second by Councilman Gonzales) and other multi-family and two-family projects.

Several items were deferred as a group on council motion; individual items were either advanced or deferred depending on sponsor requests. One item described as a mixed-use building with a grocery store in the West Ward was deferred by motion of Councilman Kelly and seconded by Councilwoman Scott Rountree. Another agenda entry for 77 transitional affordable units with retail space in the South Ward was moved forward by a sponsor who indicated support during the premeeting.

Council asked staff to provide written amendments to the clerk and to resend corrected backup documents. No final adoption votes were recorded in the captured premeeting remarks; the items remained on the docket with amendments and deferrals noted.
