The commission approved creation of a part-time supervisor position for the Road & Bridge department to provide relief for an existing supervisor who has been unable to take time off. Commissioners described the role as paying $25 per hour, nonunion, limited to fewer than 1,000 hours annually and without benefits.
In discussion, commissioners framed the part-time role as an interim alternative to budgeting a second full-time supervisor next year. The motion passed by voice vote and staff were instructed to post the position and define grade and job description.
Road & Bridge staff reported several operational items: a bridge project was delayed by recent rains and ponding where base material was placed, which pushed paving and guardrail work back about a week or more. Staff said they built a stainless-steel cab cover for a bucket truck in-house to lower costs; the in-house fabrication was presented as a substantial saving compared with factory options. Staff also outlined ditch work, pipe replacements and clearing projects underway across multiple county roads.
Staff reported in-house repairs on multiple vehicles saved the county approximately $19,006.19 in labor and parts compared with outsourcing, and noted insurance savings from removing vehicles from the fleet. Commissioners thanked Road & Bridge staff for the reported efficiencies and asked for follow-up on timelines for the bridge project and for the posting of the new position.
