Summary
A resident called for a multi-sport complex including a marked football field and indoor basketball gym; Commissioner Carla Lobo used her public comment to urge commissioners to act and announced her resignation.
During the Sept. 15 public‑comment period a resident asked the Parks and Recreation Commission how to advance a proposal for a local sports complex that would include a football field with lines and goalposts and an indoor basketball gym.
The resident, identified in the transcript only as a member of the public, said Seaside lacks marked practice fields for youth football and urged the city to build a sports complex with facilities for baseball, basketball and other youth sports. "We need a football field that has the lines and the goalpost where kids can practice... for the last 50 something years there's never been a field for the little football team to practice on that has lines and goalposts," the resident said.
Separately, Commissioner Carla Lobo addressed the commission during public comment to reflect on her time serving and to announce her resignation. Lobo said she pushed for modernization of municipal code sections, reinstating a youth commission, stronger nonprofit collaboration and follow-through on master-plan objectives including a new indoor facility. "This resignation does not mean my work ends. It simply continues in a different way as a resident who will remain actively committed to holding this commission accountable," Lobo said.
Lobo emphasized that the indoor facility, which the city's master plan has identified as a priority, is about creating safe, accessible spaces for youth and families rather than simply erecting buildings. She told commissioners: "Show up prepared, understand the issues before you... Be willing to ask the hard questions, to push through resistance, and to hold yourselves and others accountable. That is how you honor the community you serve." Lobo yielded the remainder of her time after delivering her remarks.
The resignation creates a seat vacancy on the commission; Recreation staff reminded the public that two commission seats are currently open and encouraged interested residents to apply.
