Residents press for yacht club update; city opens master-plan process for old golf course

At the Sept. 25 special meeting of the Cape Coral City Council, several residents asked for updates on the planned yacht club project and proposed community-center options for the city's recently acquired golf course property.
During citizens input, Tom Shadrach said he expected marine work on the yacht club to have started and asked why no budget dollars appeared in the FY 2026 budget for the project. David Halsey said design plans had been repeatedly described in local reporting as expected in November and questioned details including the cost of a proposed four-story parking garage and the resort-style pool; he suggested relocating community-center amenities to the former golf course to avoid hurricane and flood risk.
Mayor Gunter responded that the yacht club would be added to the agenda for the next Committee of the Whole meeting so council can get an update and provide direction if needed.
Joe Petrella, Parks and Recreation director, said the city has begun master-plan work for the old golf course site. Petrella said a steering committee met and staff will schedule public input meetings once the city onboards a new project manager after a consultant resignation. Petrella said the city aims to produce initial conceptual designs by April 2026 and will solicit neighbor and public input; he said the plan may include a community center but that inclusion has not been decided.
No formal action to fund or alter the yacht-club project or to reallocate budget dollars to the golf-course site took place at the meeting. Council directed staff to place the yacht-club update on the next Committee of the Whole agenda for reporting and potential direction.
