Arts commission reports strong interest at block party; collecting community poems through September

Commissioners reported that the arts commission’s booth at the Englewood block party attracted strong community interest in a poetry activity and other arts engagement opportunities.
Staff said volunteers at the booth collected 25 poems on site and set up a Dropbox at the public library to accept additional submissions through September into early October while the library undergoes some work. Commissioners said teachers and schools expressed interest in student participation, and staff reported having contact information from local teachers and Arapahoe Community College for possible classroom or mural collaborations.
Commissioners suggested recruiting a school-district liaison—either a faculty or student liaison—to reestablish the previous connection the commission had with the district. Staff said two earlier recommended liaisons were not able to serve and agreed to reopen outreach to the district and individual art teachers. Commissioners also discussed possible future partnerships such as poetry contests, student art calendars and high-school mural opportunities with local colleges.
Staff said social-media outreach and downloadable materials for teachers are in development, and that the pins provided at the booth were a popular item. The commission will continue to collect poems and update outreach materials for schools and future events.
