Cass County Commission appoints acting presiding commissioner, adopts levy and other routine measures

At a Sept. 17, 2025 meeting the Cass County Commission appointed an acting presiding commissioner, approved the road and bridge levy, adopted a 2026 holiday and pay schedule and approved purchase of a compact track loader; motions passed by voice vote.
Patty Ledford, chief deputy, opened the Sept. 17, 2025, Cass County Commission meeting and, citing state law, appointed Commissioner Jeff Fletcher as acting presiding commissioner for the meeting.
The commission voted, by voice vote, to approve the meeting agenda and meeting minutes from Sept. 10, 2025, and multiple work-session minutes from Sept. 3, 2025. The votes were taken by voice and recorded as passing during the session.
The commission approved Resolution 25-94 setting the road and bridge property tax levy for 2026. The packet noted last year’s levy at 0.2033 and the 2026 levy at 0.1918. Commissioners discussed that public hearings were held on Sept. 3 (8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.) before adopting the levy.
The panel also approved Resolution 25-95, adopting the county’s 2026 holiday and pay schedule, and Resolution 25-96, accepting a quote from Murphy Tractor and Equipment Company for the purchase of a 2025 John Deere compact track loader. Staff said the county is replacing an older skid steer and that the new machine has greater hydraulic power and capacity to meet operational needs.
A motion to approve a tax-sale charge-off for a Belton parcel (302 Cedar St.) was made and passed; the charge-off and the broader 2025 tax sale report were entered into the public record (see separate report on the tax sale). All motions carried by voice vote during the meeting.
