Commission hears recruitment update: applications rising but hire rates and gender gaps persist

Fire and Police Commission testing and recruiting staff told the committee on Sept. 9 that police recruitment metrics for 2025 show improved application volume but continued challenges converting applicants to hires and achieving gender parity.
Staff reported that 2024 was the first full year of continuous recruitment and produced about 1,200 applications. As of Aug. 31, 2025 staff said they had received just over 1,000 applications year-to-date; from May 1 through Aug. 31 the department received 619 applicants, a higher pace than the same period in 2024.
