Wilson County schools report rising enrollment but transportation staff shortages persist

Wilson County Education Committee members received an update showing overall enrollment growth alongside a continuing shortage of bus drivers, and were told the district is taking immediate steps to fill a vacated transportation director post.
A district staff member said the most recent enrollment figure is "about 20,800" and that the district has started the school year with that number and expects it to continue climbing. The staff member also reported that kindergarten enrollment is down compared with last year "about 60 to 80" students, a trend the speaker said is being monitored.
On transportation, staff told the committee the district has lost its transportation director and will interview candidates next week to replace the position. The staff member said the director's job had required very long hours and that the district will discuss additional recruitment and retention options, including surveying parents about routes. "No drivers. We're gonna discuss next week, in the board meeting. There is some possible. Maybe we do some surveys for parent," the staff member said.
Board members asked about attendance and operational impacts. The staff member said the district is seeing high student attendance overall and described a roughly 95 percent student attendance rate while acknowledging ongoing service challenges on some routes.
The committee took a motion to accept the director's report during the meeting; the motion carried by voice vote.
Committee members said they want the district to return with options after the next board discussion, including recruitment strategies for drivers and any short-term coverage plans to reduce disruption for families.
