Cherokee Nation Career Services says Job Corps background checks reopened; tours and applications underway

Diane Kelly, director of Career Services, told the Cherokee Nation Executive and Finance Committee that federal Job Corps background checks have reopened and that her office had two completed applications entering background review.
Kelly said there are more than 18,000 applications nationwide for 119 Job Corps centers; regional teams are visiting centers and the Dallas regional office had 12 centers still to visit in the region. “We’ve already been notified that there’s some of ours that have gone through the background process,” Kelly said. She added that the office has scheduled tours for prospective students on Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Kelly credited prior outreach by council members and tribal organizations for reopening federal processing and said staff have worked weekends to prepare centers and documentation. She highlighted two individuals from Marble City and Adair County in the monthly report as success examples and noted the ongoing Recovery Coming Home program.
Committee members welcomed the update; one commenter noted the Nation’s advocacy and data helped congressional offices understand where Job Corps closures would have affected communities. Kelly asked councilors to refer 16- to 24-year-olds interested in trade training to the Thursday tours and said applications could be taken following tours.
