Madison County commissioners approve moving Precinct 302 from Mark Apartments to Mount Charity Baptist Church

Madison County commissioners on Monday approved relocating a polling place for Precinct 302 from the Mark Apartments to Mount Charity Baptist Church and agreed to keep the precinct number at 302 rather than create a new number.

A commissioner moved that voters from the Mark Apartments precinct be moved to Mount Charity Baptist Church and initially proposed renumbering the site as Precinct 303 effective Dec. 1, 2025. After discussion and guidance attributed to the secretary of state’s office that leaving the precinct number in place is less confusing, the motion was amended to make the Mount Charity Baptist Church the new location for Precinct 302. Commissioner Pierce moved the approval and Commissioner Denton seconded; the commission voted “aye” with no recorded opposition.

Commissioners and staff noted the relocation affects portions of District 3 and District 4 within the precinct. The commission also acknowledged a letter from the Mark Apartments terminating its role as a polling location; the commission recorded acknowledgement for the minutes but did not vote on the letter itself.

Commissioners said the change requires placement on the board of supervisors agenda for final approval. There was some discussion about the effective date: the record includes differing statements. At one point a motion recorded an effective date of Dec. 1, 2025; later a commissioner stated the change “will not take effect until March,” and the same meeting record also references Dec. 1. The commission did not reconcile those statements in the public record during the meeting. The commission said election staff will notify voters of the correct polling place for upcoming elections.
