Mayor Norma Sepúlveda presented a proclamation declaring September 2025 as Hunger Action Month in Harlingen and invited Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley representatives to address the commission.
Libby Syne, CEO of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, said the organization serves more than 93,000 people every week across Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties and prioritizes child hunger, senior hunger, disaster relief and emergency assistance. “We have a staff of under a 100 people. There's no way we could feed the 93,000 individuals every single week without the help of people like you,” Syne said.
Syne also highlighted the food bank’s claim that “every $1 donated equals 5 meals,” and encouraged donations, food drives and volunteer work during Hunger Action Month. She promoted statewide and national partnerships, including Feeding America and Feeding Texas, and asked residents to wear orange on Hunger Action Day as a show of support.
Mayor Sepúlveda thanked the food-bank staff and volunteers, noted that the city will keep a donation box at City Hall and encouraged residents and local organizations to host drives and volunteer at distributions.
The commission posed for a group photo with food-bank staff following the presentation. The proclamation text filed with the meeting record cites national and regional hunger statistics and endorses local community engagement for the month.
