The Redlands City Council unanimously approved a request to install a memorial bench in front of Caprice Cafe to honor the late owner, Christopher (Chris) Papino.
Council member Davis introduced the item, describing Papino as a longtime downtown restaurateur who “stepped up to help restaurants pivot to outdoor dining” during the pandemic and helped sustain the downtown business community. Facilities staff told the council an appropriately styled downtown bench typically costs $900 to $1,000, requires roughly three to four weeks for delivery, and that a plaque would be added after installation.
Hannah Van Gelder, speaking in support of the bench, described Papino’s 25 years of activity in Redlands, his work at Caprice Cafe, and community contributions including concerts and student presentations. Van Gelder said friends and community members were willing to donate toward a plaque and that a bench outside the restaurant would provide a place for remembrance.
Council moved and seconded the matter, and roll call recorded yes votes from Council member Barich, Council member Davis, Mayor Pro Tem Shaw and Mayor Salcedo.
