Del Valle ISD technology staff presented an information item on a planned teacher device refresh Sept. 2 proposing a standardized classroom setup: one Apple MacBook Air M4 with three years of AppleCare per teacher, a Dell secondary monitor and a USB‑C hub for each classroom, to be acquired under a multi‑year lease.
Mr. Steve Gonzales described problems with the district’s existing teacher devices — many at end of life and warranty, causing frequent repair tickets and instructional disruption — and said the district tested 12 models across vendors before selecting the MacBook Air M4 as the recommended standard. Gonzales said staff collected more than 400 points of teacher feedback during demonstrations and that Apple has partnered on professional development for deployment. The proposed purchase covers approximately 1,000 teacher devices; staff said Apple Financial Services offered a leasing plan with an initial credit from trade‑in (up to $125,000 for eligible returns) and a guaranteed buyback at the contract end estimated at $225,000.
Staff presented high‑level costs: roughly $1.2 million total when monitors and hubs are included, with the first lease payment reduced by the trade‑in credit; the district expects to take delivery of the full set of 1,000 devices in the first year and to use a pool of about 50 devices as a buffer for onboarding and while units are under repair. Implementation would prioritize student‑facing instructional staff (teachers, interventionists, SPED teachers, librarians and instructional coaches) and include training and rollout support from Apple. Staff said surplus Windows devices beyond useful life would be repurposed for testing carts and other district uses rather than sold for material value.
Gonzales indicated a formal board action item would appear at the Sept. 16 meeting to approve the leasing agreement and monitor purchase. Trustees asked about PD for staff transitioning from Windows/Android devices, delivery timelines, replacement buffers and which staff categories were eligible; staff answered that Apple will provide PD, devices should ship quickly if approved in September, and that prioritized staff include teachers, SPED instructional staff, interventionists, coaches and librarians.
