Southwestern City Schools sought $75,000 from Grove City to sustain its adult hub training program after a state earmark did not materialize in the latest budget.
Christine Galvin, director of career technical education, told council the adult hub provides state‑recognized industry credentials and career training for unemployed and underemployed adults; the program supplies a pipeline of credentialed workers that local employers hire. Galvin cited local employers that have hired program graduates, including Horton Emergency Vehicles, MediGrove, StoryPoint and Optalis, and said the program graduated 129 students last year.
Galvin said the district had sought an earmark in the state budget (prior years provided $125,000 annually) but that the current budget did not include the requested funding. The district requested $75,000 from Grove City to bridge the gap while it pursues additional state, county and private funding and corporate sponsorships.
Council members asked about prior earmark amounts (Galvin said the district had previously received $125,000 per year through the biannual state budget) and whether the district had sought funds from Franklin County and the City of Columbus; Galvin said the district is pursuing county, city and private partners and invited council members to tour the program. Several councilors praised the program and supported the request; one councilor voted no on the ordinance at final reading.
Ordinance C3425, appropriating $75,000 from the general fund to support the Southwestern adult hub, passed council on second reading; the roll‑call vote recorded one no vote from Council member Wilson.
