At the Village of Tivoli Board of Trustees meeting on Aug. 20, 2025, trustees reviewed preliminary results from a village garbage-service survey and discussed next steps, including coordinating with the Village of Red Hook and preparing a report for the September meeting.
Clerk Karen Cleveland reported that the village had sold 515 trash tags since the July meeting, a figure trustees cited as evidence of continued use of the current pay-per-bag/tag system. The board said it had received about 70 survey responses in paper and digital forms.
Why it matters: Tivoli is evaluating how to keep its household-waste program sustainable and convenient. The board is exploring operational changes — for example, more convenient locations for tag distribution, one-time collection events, or adjusted tag pricing — and will not commit to changes without cost estimates and a proposed plan.
Discussion and next steps: Trustees said staff will combine Tivoli’s survey results with data from the Village of Red Hook (which has been participating with Tivoli in a shared-service approach over the summer), produce a frequently asked questions guide and present a costed proposal to the board at or before the September meeting. Meeting comments indicated the village will assess whether existing tag revenues and proposed service changes would require tag-price adjustments; trustees said they would not proceed without a budgeted plan.
Operational notes from the meeting:
- Survey responses: Trustees said roughly 70 responses were collected (paper and electronic); the board will publish the survey results before the September meeting.
- Tags sold: Clerk Karen Cleveland reported 515 trash tags sold since the July meeting.
- Pilot and coordination: Trustees said they will compile Red Hook and Tivoli data and return with recommendations in September; options discussed included additional tag sale locations (library or other public sites), one-time collection days (contracted hauler participation required), and whether tag pricing would need revision to sustain services.
No formal vote was recorded on service changes at the Aug. 20 meeting. Trustees said they will continue selling tags and refining the plan with cost estimates and an eye toward sustainability.
