Staff updates: homelessness strategy briefing, Elevate Boulder report, Welcoming America accreditation and community events

City staff updated the commission on recent items staff are tracking, including an Aug. 14 homelessness strategy briefing, an Elevate Boulder evaluation due Sept. 15 and a Sept. 21 participant storytelling event, a Welcoming America accreditation effort, community outreach tied to Labor Rights Week and local Hispanic Heritage Month events.
City staff told the Boulder Human Relations Commission on Aug. 26 about several ongoing projects and upcoming community events the commission has followed.
Staff recommended commissioners who want background on the city’s homelessness work review the City Council study session presentation from Aug. 14; staff described the presentation as a substantial framing of the city’s homelessness strategy.
The Elevate Boulder final evaluation report is scheduled for release Sept. 15, and the city’s Elevate Boulder team will host a participant storytelling event at the Dairy Arts Center on Sept. 21 beginning at 2 p.m., staff said. Staff also said Boulder is pursuing accreditation from Welcoming America, a national nonprofit that evaluates municipal efforts to support immigrant communities; staff have submitted a self‑audit and expect follow-up meetings with Welcoming America staff in the coming months.
Staff noted the Human Relations Fund is supporting a Nepali community event in early September; commissioners asked staff to share logistical information when available. Staff also said this week is Labor Rights Week and the city is doing outreach around the city’s Failure to Pay Wages ordinance (the city’s wage-theft ordinance), including social media and a short video to raise awareness about wage protections.
On Hispanic Heritage Month, staff said they were not aware of city-funded events this year but noted Festival Del Sol on Sept. 21 at Chautauqua as a large community event with music, vendors and a nature walk. Staff also highlighted the city’s “What’s Up Boulder?” public engagement event scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7, at Scott Carpenter Park from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and reminded commissioners the dinner with council is set for Oct. 21.
Staff said they will circulate flyers and links for the events and the Elevate Boulder report when those materials are available.
