Peachtree Corners city council approved a resolution officially naming the public park at the intersection of Jones Mill Road and Greenpoint Parkway "Lauren Sawyer Park." The resolution was read into the record and approved by the council.
The resolution states the park will provide open lawn areas, walking paths, landscaping, public art and other amenities to serve residents, and that it is dedicated in honor and memory of Lauren Sawyer, described in the resolution as a lifelong Gwinnett County resident, Norcross High School graduate, voting advocate for South Side residents and a devoted mother of three. The resolution notes Sawyer was slain at age 31 and that naming the park will serve as a lasting tribute.
Councilmember motioned to approve the resolution and the council seconded and approved the measure by voice/hand vote; no roll-call tally was recorded on the public record. The resolution authorizes the city manager to design and install appropriate signage, plaques or other commemorative markers to reflect the park's official name and dedication.
After the vote a family member addressed the council, thanking members and saying, "She was my girl. She was our girl." Family members present included Kim, Lacey and the children, as stated during remarks. The family indicated they plan to use and care for the park.
The naming was approved at the meeting; councilmembers did not take additional votes related to park design or funding during this session.
