At its Sept. 4 meeting, the Springfield Municipal Regional Planning Commission voted 9-0 to approve the site plan for a new wastewater treatment plant on a 66‑acre parcel at 530 Lawrence Lane. The application was filed by Griggs and Maloney Incorporated on behalf of the City of Springfield.
Planning staff said the project replaces aging treatment facilities and is intended to provide capacity for projected population and industrial growth within the city’s urban growth boundary. The submitted site plan includes primary treatment structures, process equipment, administrative and operations buildings, internal circulation drives, utility connections and buffers. Access is shown from Lawrence Lane.
A representative for the applicant and city staff answered commissioners’ questions about whether the existing plant would remain in service during construction. Staff said the existing facility will be taken out of service and abandoned once the new plant is operational and that portions of the current site will be used during construction for some components.
Staff recommended approval contingent on resolving remaining staff comments before permits are issued. After a motion and second, the commission approved the site plan by roll call. Commissioners who recorded “yes” were Briggs, Thomas, Boyd, Viv, Scott, Baggett, Townsend, Greg and Moreland; the motion passed 9-0.
