Board briefed on revised internet acceptable-use policy tied to Georgia—s SB 351
Summary

The Muscogee County School Board—s policy committee presented a revised Internet Acceptable Use Policy (IFBG) and told the board the update is required by state law enacted in 2024.
"Based on continual review of board policies, the Muscogee County School Board has revised board policy IFBG, Internet acceptable use. The passage of senate bill 351, protecting Georgia's children on social media act of 2024, requires the board to review the existing policy and make any changes in accordance with the new law," the committee presenter said.
The committee said the law requires the district to specify consequences and procedures for students, employees and nonemployees (such as volunteers or visitors) who violate acceptable-use provisions. Committee members said student discipline procedures will be addressed through the district—s progressive student discipline handbook, employee matters through the employee handbook and that the administration will return with procedures for incidents involving nonemployees.
Because state law sets a deadline for local boards to adopt conforming policies, the administration asked the board to waive the standard 30-day waiting period and approve the revised policy at the upcoming voting meeting. The committee reported the statutory deadline to adopt a policy is Oct. 1, 2025.
Committee members said the draft language is drawn from the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) model and is intended to align district policy with state requirements. The work session record shows the committee presented the recommendation for consideration; no formal vote was recorded during the work session.
