The packet and discussion stated that sick‑time payouts for the two injuries to date totaled about $17,000 for one case and about $8,700 for the second. Staff said the department projects combined sick‑time and coverage costs could reach about $61,000 for the year under current trends; if the village had to rely on overtime for all coverage rather than part‑time hires, the cost projection could reach roughly $78,000.
The committee discussed the department's appropriated overtime line ($106,131.98) and noted that the requested $38,220 would come from police levy reserves rather than the general operating appropriation. Committee members and staff discussed alternatives including short‑term disability insurance, workers' compensation, and creating a dedicated benefits pool fund to cover PTO and sick‑time liabilities. Village finance staff reported the solicitor (Butler) was hesitant to create a new fund without precedent.
Committee member David Fisher moved to recommend council approval of the $38,220 request to cover part‑time shift coverage and reduce overtime; a second was recorded and the committee voted in favor. Members said the recommendation will appear on the upcoming council appropriations agenda so council can act on it on Oct. 27.
