The CBC president (referred to in the meeting as “Madam CEO, president”) briefed the commission on major events and promotional activity that staff said drove strong visitor demand and national exposure.
The CEO reported the July 4 weekend drew a record 365,000 attendees with direct visitor spending of $23,800,000 and a record 30,788 hotel rooms sold. She said CMA Fest generated $86,000,000 in direct visitor spending with 95,000 attendees and that downtown hotel demand rose 6% over the prior year.
Staff credited stadium concerts with strong downtown occupancy: Metallica (May) produced 95% downtown occupancy; AC/DC’s delayed date helped keep downtown occupancy at 98% during their event; Coldplay’s July show sold 55,663 tickets, which the CEO said were 81% to visitors, 16% local and 3% international. The CEO said such events “helped us” drive hotel demand and encouraged more stadium concerts in future bookings.
On publicity, staff described several national promotions: the city was listed in Travel + Leisure’s world rankings and a YouGov study ranked Nashville highly in favorability among large U.S. cities. The CEO said the CBC hosted writers and television producers (including for ABC’s 9‑1‑1) and noted a recent Stand Up To Cancer telecast taped in Nashville that aired on multiple national platforms.
The CEO also said Michelin inspectors had been in town evaluating restaurants and that the Michelin announcement ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 3 in Greenville, N.C. Commission members asked about America250 grants; staff estimated individual grants at approximately $25,000 and one remark referenced a “total of 45” (clarified at the meeting as not specified per‑grant details).
Why it matters: Large events and national media exposure translate to measurable hotel demand and visitor spending; commissioners said concert and festival bookings are central to the city’s tourism strategy but also raise questions about long‑term product mix and supply.
